The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Tar
Wars Program represents more than 93,100 family physicians,
family practice residents, and medical students nationwide. It is
the only medical specialty organization devoted solely to primary
care. Tar Wars, which reaches more than 400,000 students annually,
is an award-winning, youth tobacco-free education program and poster
contest of the AAFP. Tar Wars adopts an effective and innovative
approach to teaching tobacco prevention and celebrating healthy
lifestyles. The program focuses on the short-term, image-based consequences
of tobacco use and how to think critically about tobacco advertising.
State/regional coordinators can be found on the Web site. The Web
site also includes a viewable and downloadable copy of the new program
curriculum, parent information handout, and tobacco experiments
to be used by presenters and classrooms.
